One of the grounds for obtaining a residence permit is kinship with Latvians.
If you had Latvians in your family line, and evidence has been preserved, then you can obtain a residence permit in Latvia.
These must be relatives in the ascending line - parents, grandparents, great-grandparents.
Birth certificates, marriage certificates, and archival references are accepted as supporting documents.
All documents other than Latvian ones must be certified with an Apostille.
In addition, you will need to prepare a special application form, a photograph, a certificate of no criminal record, a bank reference confirming financial means, and a document confirming your address of residence in Latvia.
This package of documents is submitted for review to the Department of Citizenship and Migration in Latvia, or to the Embassy of your country of residence; both options are acceptable. The case is reviewed and a decision is made.
If the decision is positive, you may be issued a permanent residence permit valid for 5 years.
In some cases, you may even be eligible for certain social assistance, such as children's education allowances, housing allowances, and others.
