One of the mandatory documents for obtaining or renewing a residence permit is insurance.

1) What risks does the insurance cover?
Residence permit insurance covers expenses for emergency medical care, dental care, and repatriation.
2) Can I obtain more "comprehensive" insurance?
Latvian insurance companies do not offer programs like major European insurance companies, with large coverage amounts and treatment at premium clinics worldwide.
Our insurance policies for residence permit holders are very limited, and cannot be expanded.
3) Can I use a Russian insurance policy issued by a bank?
In some Russian banks, clients receive international policies as a "bonus".
Most often, they are not valid in Latvia. The main reason is the limited number of days these policies are active. Usually, it is 30-50 days per year.
But it should be 365 days per year. Latvian insurance is valid year-round.
4) Can I obtain insurance for 2 or 3 years at once?
Yes, this is possible, and it is a very convenient option.
If you obtain insurance for a long period, you won't need to spend time on annual renewal and payment.
The Department will register the "long-term" insurance in its system and remind you in the decision when you will need to renew your insurance in a few years.
