We are often asked - when should documents be submitted to extend a residence permit for the next 5 years.
Let's consider the following example. The "five-year period" ends on April 30, 2020.
There are two options.
First - all documents can be submitted in Latvia.
The recommended timeframe is one and a half months ahead to allow for 30-day review + residence permit cards in 10 business days.
In mid-March you will submit the documents, by mid-April you will have a decision, and by the end of April you will have new cards.
The residence permit validity periods will remain almost unchanged.
Second - all documents can be submitted at the Embassy.
If you live in Moscow, then this would be the Embassy of Latvia in Moscow.
Only when requesting a residence permit for the next 5 years can documents be submitted at the embassy or consulate. This is not possible for regular annual registration.
Unlike the first option, you are not limited by deadlines here.
You can submit documents in advance, BEFORE the cards expire. Or you can submit later, within three months, AFTER the cards expire.
If the cards expire on April 30, then documents can be submitted until July 30.
At the embassy, you can choose several processing timeframes - 30 days, or 10 business days.
However, these timeframes will only begin counting once the embassy forwards the entire document package to Latvia, to the Department of Citizenship and Migration. The transmission takes 2-3 weeks.
When a positive decision is made, you will be able to obtain an entry visa to Latvia and come for 3 business days to produce and receive your residence permit cards.
Please note that residence permit cards are not issued at the embassy. That is why you will need to come to Latvia for a few days to obtain the cards.
Usually, families submit documents to the embassy when certain circumstances change and residence permit dates need to be rescheduled.
Most often, this is related to children's education. If residence permit matters are handled in spring annually, it disrupts the school schedule. But if you move it to summer, it is more convenient.
