On Amendments to the Law on Obtaining a Residence Permit

Forthcoming amendments to the residence permit acquisition law

  • As is known, on November 9, 2013, the President of Latvia Andris Berzins did not approve amendments to the Immigration Law, which provided for the introduction of quotas for applicants seeking a temporary residence permit based on the purchase of real property, as well as the introduction of a new additional requirement - a one-time contribution of 25,000 euros to a special state fund.
  • Since the President of Latvia Andris Berzins did not approve the aforementioned amendments, the Latvian Saeima was scheduled to review the President's remarks on January 30, 2014, and agree on further actions. However, on January 30, 2014, consideration of this matter was postponed to April 10.
  • Additionally, one of the political parties proposed increasing the amount of real property purchase to 250,000 euros. Thus, instead of the current purchase amount of 142,300 euros, it was proposed to increase the purchase amount to 250,000 euros.
  • At present, deputies of the Latvian Saeima continue to review proposals and comments regarding the Immigration Law.
