The Problem of Unpaid Fines and Taxes When Extending a Residence Permit

Why the Residence Permit Card Is Not Issued on Time in Latvia

Some clients, during the standard (annual) residence permit renewal, encounter unpaid fines or taxes on their record. For example, this could be a fine for smoking in a prohibited place, a speeding fine, or an unpaid tax on rental income.

As long as there is an outstanding fine, a new residence permit card will not be issued.

Unfortunately, you cannot pay the debt at the Department. Payment must be made through bank transfer using the specified payment details. The card can only be obtained once the funds have been received in the budget.

To avoid this unpleasant situation, you should do the following. Review and recall all your violations. If anything remains unpaid, it must be settled BEFORE submitting documents to the Department.

Additionally, you can ask a Department employee to check you in a special database. Finally, if you have any doubts, you can clarify the payment details at the Information Center located at: Riga, Bruninieku Street 72B.
