News about extending residence permit in Latvia

Potential changes to residence permit in Latvia in 2016, president rejected amendments

To dispel rumors related to amendments to the Immigration Law, KOM-INVEST has analyzed these amendments, contacted the legal commission of the Latvian Saeima and received the following information.

Most importantly, the amendments adopted by the Saeima have currently been rejected by the president and sent for revision.

Therefore, in the near future, during annual residence permit renewal, there will be no changes.

Since the president identified 7 contradictions in the amendments to the law, their correction may take a considerable amount of time.

We want to provide additional clarification regarding the fee of 5,000 euros for residence permit renewal.

Since the president rejected the amendments, this fee will not be collected at this time.

However, many of our clients ask - what was the proposal in the amendments that the president did not approve, regarding the payment of a fee for residence permit renewal?

Should this fee be charged annually, or once every five years?

Should 5,000 euros be paid for the entire family, or from each individual person?

We inform you that in the current version, the following was proposed: The fee would be charged once every five years, upon residence permit renewal.

The fee would be charged per family (if a family has five people, the fee would be 5,000 euros, not 25,000 euros).

The fee would apply to residence permit holders based on real estate acquisition, capital investment in an enterprise, bank deposits, or investment in government bonds.

Thus, it would not apply to residence permit holders based on family ties, education, and so on.

We repeat once again that the amendments have currently been rejected by the president, therefore there is no need to pay the fee of 5,000 euros, the annual standard residence permit renewal procedure proceeds according to the usual rules, which you can familiarize yourself with here.

Our company closely monitors amendments to the residence permit law, so we will inform you immediately of any planned changes!
