As previously reported, the Latvian government will be amending the Immigration Law
There is even inaccurate information circulating that the changes will come into force on December 31st. This is not true!
As of the end of November, there has not even been a first reading yet. It should be noted that this law will be passed through three readings, and then approved by the president.
A lawyer from our company KOM-INVEST examined how the Immigration Law was amended in 2014.
As is known, from September 1st, 2014, the investment threshold was increased from 143,000 euros to 250,000 euros, and a rule was introduced - for a "golden visa" only one property can be purchased.
Those amendments were submitted to the government on October 15th, 2013. Final approval took place on May 8th, 2014. The president approved the amendments on May 22nd.
The law came into force on September 1st. Throughout the summer of 2014, buyers were registering transactions to "comply with the old rules" before August 31st.
It is evident that legislative changes in Latvia are a lengthy process.
