Taxes for cars with foreign license plates in Latvia

From January 1, 2021, taxes have been reduced for vehicles with "foreign license plates" in Latvia

For several years, the following rule has been in effect in Latvia.

If you have a personal code and a registered address, but your vehicle has "foreign license plates" (for example, Russian or Lithuanian plates), you had to pay a fee ranging from 10 euros (per day) to 1000 euros (per year).

From January 1, 2021, this rule has been cancelled.

For "foreign" vehicles, you now pay the same as for "local vehicles".

For example, previously a Range Rover (diesel, three liters) cost 1000 euros, but now it costs approximately 160 euros (depending on the year of manufacture and emissions indicators).

Moreover, you can pay only for the period when you use the vehicle. Idle periods are not subject to tax.
